I don't think anyone has said much about naval maps. I've tried a couple lately but it's difficult since the computer plays them stupidly. But in any case, I finf it helps my pop growth with schooners - especially cheap ones. Do you think it's worth doing in maps like Carolina, etc?

By not doing naval maps we are totally limiting the game. Also our thoughts about civs (this civ is good this civ sucks kinda thing) may change with a naval map. I think we need to play naval maps more. It would really expand on the game play and add some intersting strategies.

carolina or new england is a good one, mostly land with a bunch of water as well. I agree, naval is a huge part of the game.
I think with the unknown map coming out it will give us more options and unknownness.

This question is mostly directed to Pcups - What's the best way to do a fishing boom? It seems that schooners and advanced docks allow you to build a second "town center" in the first or second age. Fishing out a limited area like Yucantan makes me wonder if it's worth it. Which maps work and which don't? How many schooners do you recommend?

Ok heres the lowdown D.
The ports start with a max of 400 wood, on caronlina or 200 wood on a normal map and to answer your question i ALWAYS USE SCHOONERS ON A NAVAL MAP, if it has water and fish and whales im in. Ill do a normal FF if it doesnt.
Schooners kinda allows me to do a fast industrial D. But while building units allong the way, In my opinion its the best strat on earth, I can usually get to the industrail age at 15 or so minutes while having a strong militarly force.
This would deffinately go for the ottomans as well, as you said before when you lose a couple of peasants you get set back since you are the ottomans, well if you get raided no problem, build more boats.
All you need is 4 peasants on wood, with the market upgrade, and you should be set, at least i am with the ports.
Now i wont send advanced dock until im aging up to the next age, if its a tight game ill save the card for 8 cassaors or something like that.
Now D, im not very familiar with the ottomans at all, ive only played around with them a couple of times. But i think the set up is quite the same.
Get schooners as soon as its available and build a dock, its easier with ottos because you start out with so much wood.
Dont forget the really cheap upgrades for fishing boats, first one is 90 w/g for fishing and whales.
So we all know hte ports suck at offense, so i relly on defence. To keep my boats safe i send the 4 boat mercenary card, i also send the 40% building hp card. For the ottos you might wanna choose a card that lets you get on the offense faster.
So D, what ill help you do is combine the ports boat boom with the ottomans offense, and you will have a pretty killer deck. Ill laydown my build order and such. Imagine a rush where you just bounce right back...

Thanks Pcups. I found that schooners build in 24 seconds (My settlers build in 48). It also seems that fish will eventually "fish out" but whaling goes on forever. 10 schooners on whales cost 400w - 1/2 cheaper than plantations. Yes 4 settlers on wood keeps a steady supply of boats. Also, if later in the game I want to adjust my settler pop, I can wth schooners. With town centers, I keep producing to the max. that I can't lower. With a good Carolina start, I can build a trade post, market, hunting dogs, dock and house.

Nice guys. Just be sure to have 5 galleys/caravals to protect you. Schooners are easy targets... but I think the boat boom is a great strategy for the sluggish ottomans. I would figure with 2-3 TCs early, the ports wouldn't need it as much as other civs like the Spanish or Ottos.
