As is typical in ages, Josh loves something. The rest of us hate it. In this case it's hatamoto samurai. An army of 10 can wipe out an entire normal army or rape someone's entire base.
So what beats them? Well they're HI, so the normal expectation is LI. But when the hatamoto can take down a wall in one volley, or worse yet, the japanese mortars take down the walls while the hatamoto rush in, the LI just don't kill fast enough. And when the hatamoto get in on a group of LI? DED in one hit. Cannons? Still not powerful enough. Hatamoto just have too much attack, area effect, seige, and HP.
But there's help, with today's new purple pill called ninja. Yes, fucking ninjas. I ran some tests with a normal encounter of 10 ninjas v 10 hatamoto. The results? 6 ninjas left at 1/4 hp.
I think the hatamoto must have some kind of penalty vs ninjas, because they just didn't die as fast as other infantry did.
Perhaps a combo is best. Ninjas tie up the hatamoto while LI or cannons blast from range. The hatamoto can't ignore the ninjas like they can other units, because ninjas have x10 vs hatamoto.
Ninjas are mercenaries, so I'm suggesting this for civs that have cards to spare (like the ottos), or maps where they're available in the saloon.
Spies don't work well, but I haven't tested the effects of agents or assassins. Perhaps they work as well.

Hatamoto seem to have the most detrimental effect in 20 minute treaties like we were playing when Josh's 15 of them broke even with about 100 of my units, most of which were Jags and Mace. Sadly, the Natives and Asians could have a real problem against Hats because they have no Spy type unit. However, Josh would have a real hard time stoping the Aztecs or the Souix later in the game because they can't counter anything other than Heavy cav and light inf. Josh also said that "smart" Aztec players use Eagle runners against Hat. This seems counter-intuitive and I'm not sure whether to buy it but maybe they are considered light infantry as well. Dunno.

Because Hatamoto or what ever are mercs, spies, ninjas and assassins all have x10 against them. Same with every other merc, this was the major deterrent with my german merc rush that thankfully people rarely used. spies don't work because they have low hp, but thrown into a mix of HI and LI they can be put to good use. And they can be build out of the church!
Japs would have a hard time against the sioux just because everything they build gets countered by horse riders. Plus that bitch of a war chief will give those cannons some problems.
But anyway, you are better off just taking out the stupid shoguns with the spies than the hatamotos

Daimyo are not classified as Hero, so ninjas suck dick against them. I think the best way to kill daimyo is with ranged cav.

Actually, I'll bet Hatamoto would work well against those damn Daimys... but that kinda defeats the purpose. RRs and Wakinas + WC would basically fuck anything the Japanese could throw at the Souix. It would be kinda cool to combine the Soiux with someone like the Chinese or Indians who could support them economically along with the Russians for some unit production power!
