Everyone knows my ruyter-horse art strat. Everyone knows how annoying it is. There are, however, a few holes. Culv. / Light cannon these guys have so much range that much of my horse art dies before it can take out enough infantry for my ruyters to clean out the cannons.
Here's where the ports come in. There are two reasons for mass ruyter death: 1) short range: the enemy puts heavy infantry in front of his cannons. My ruyters run up to his cannons, but since the range is only 14, the HI can melee me without walking hardly any distance at all. solution: the portuguese range card allows me to pick off enemy artillery without being attacked by melee HI. 2) the 1.5 range INF attack bonus against ruyters: skirms, longbows, cassadors etc. all own ruyters. Solution: The dragoons have 30% range armor.
Perhaps the ports offer a stronger alternative to an already strong strategy.

I think what we also found was the value of the Aztecs to help support the attack. I combination of arrow knights and jaguar prowl knights would make you attack killer! The arrow knights have 5X vs. culvs which have low HP as it is... I really love killing them. Moreover, the culvs do NOT have an attack bonus against arrow knights because arrows are NOT considered artillary. I didn't know that! I think it takes 5 culv blasts to kill one arrow. Moreover, the arrows are great against buildings and the good rate of fire allows them to move and fire with ease. The Jaguars aren't good just for their prowl feature, but they are also good against heavy infantry and ALL cavalry including those pesky dragoons. They have great HP and only take one pop. That would have helped against our jan problems last game... and their seige is good too. There is a reason that I have an 81% win in treaty, and I owe it all to the aztecs. I've found that orp raids are really tough in NR games because of all the damn walls... so I pick the Aztecs because of their cost-effective unit killing ability and good economy late game! Warrior priests are fun!

tim, the only situation where i would use what you are talking about is if i was playing you or any other dutch that has that strategy. I really never attack with my cassadors/HI/cannons, i sit back and let my mortars do damage, and if anyone comes with in distance i destroy them with all the things i have that have more than 20 range. Much easier and if your army gets destroy it takes almost no resources to build back up. AND no time

If anyone is interested , I could give you a strat that allows the Ports to get 99 settlers in 18 mins and be imperial in 19 mins. You get 175,00 resources gathered. I used Ozarks and got no native upgrades and minimal treasures (hard computer opponent). I used only 1/2 map resources.

I still think the French or Germans should have the most resources at the end of the NR. With Fur Trade or 99 peasants and 20(25?) settler wagons, there's no reason why those two civs shouldn't have 30-40% more recourses. I still love the aztecs...

I recorded a treaty game tonight. 99 settlers at 17:45. Age 5 at 19:20. All resources at 40 mins 174,000. If anyone wants to watch, it's on my machine. I'm not saying it's better than any other civ. I'm just suggesting anyone thinking of playing the Ports might want to check it out. Enjoy!

PSS Actually anyone that wants to get to age 3 fast to get more TC's should consider the 700 gold shipment. I know B & T don't think much of resource shipments in treaty games, but this rocks.

It seems in the last game i had more resources than tim, a lot more. And even more than the 2 other port players on the other team. Seems germans are better at eco!

germans do indeed have one of the best... and im telling u, the french eco late later game after 1 hr game time say... is not very good

If i spammed dopples and war wagons and didnt micro them, i would probably be in the same situation after one hour. But since you HAVE to use cuirs, it sucks more for you.
